The Mule Rack by Baja Rack

Tuesday, November 8th, 2011

One of the biggest challenges when preparing for a journey in a Jeep vehicle is space. Whether it’s a weekend excursion or an expedition to a remote locale, there’s rarely enough space in the vehicle to accommodate all the needs for storing camp gear, food, and everything else a person or family needs to have a successful trip. For many of us, the obvious answer is a rack system that maximizes storage, limits weight, and is also cost effective.

Enter the Mule Rack by BajaRack. (more…)

The Maine Event – An Overland Adventure

Sunday, October 2nd, 2011

For Jeep enthusiasts living in the northeast, winter is the most trying time of year. It’s not so bad around the holidays when there’s a lot of “real life” family stuff to do, but then your heart begins to slowly sink when January rolls around and you’ve not had dirt under tire for two months and there’s nothing ahead but the long winter wheeling blues. What really helps is having a mid-winter off-road event to go to, but such events are pretty rare in the northeast. Enter the Maine Winter Romp, an off-road event like no other. (more…)

Catsailing with ‘Ol Rubi

Tuesday, August 2nd, 2011

One summer day in 2002, a friend invited my wife and me to go sailing on her little Sunfish. The power of the wind and water was exhilarating, and we were hooked. Pitting our skills against nature and the technical aspects of a sailboat drew us into catamarans which are the ultimate adventure in small boat sailing. (more…)

It’s the Journey, Not the Destination

Friday, July 22nd, 2011

It turns out the Mud Springs Trail in Arizona has confounded many of us Phoenician four-wheelers over the years. Back in the day before our first Jeep, George and I attempted Mud Springs in our ’99 Dodge Ram 1500 4×4, and on another outing we borrowed our neighbor’s ATV. On both occasions we missed reaching the Holy Grail at the end of the trail: an alleged “Miner’s Shack.” We tried it again when we were newbie’s in Number 7, and again we only got to Mud Springs Hill. In fact, the first time we actually made it to the Miner’s Shack was on foot and had hiked in from a different trailhead. (more…)

Cycling Across America

Thursday, March 17th, 2011

Twenty-nine hundred miles in twenty-five days. The distance and time are staggering in their own right but throw in elements such as heat, wind, and rain and one might be lead to believe that this sounds more like a form of grueling punishment than camaraderie and adventure. As it turns out, trekking from Costa Mesa, California across the United States to Savannah, Georgia by way of bicycle was all of this and then some. (more…)

A Gathering of Okies

Friday, February 4th, 2011

Rock climbing in Oklahoma? Normally, when someone thinks of Oklahoma, they think of a flat and dry landscape with tumbleweedsrolling across the prairie. But this could not be further from the truth. Local adventurers know that southwest Oklahoma hosts some of the best rock climbing in the Midwest and a local favorite is Baldy Point…also known to local climbers as Quartz Mountain. (more…)

Hooray for Ouray

Sunday, January 30th, 2011

It’s that time of year again when the climbing shoes and chalk bag find their place in the gear closet while the crampons and ice tools screech with the sound of a file sharpening their steel points. Yes, winter is finally here and in full glory with plenty of snow and cold temperatures, turning the most glorious of waterfalls into true sculptures of ice that are waiting to be ascended. (more…)

All Mixed Up

Wednesday, January 12th, 2011

In the fall when the temperatures are trying to get below zero in the foothills of Colorado, the ice has no problem being hardened by the sub freezing temperatures in the high country above 10,000 feet. In most years the fall is one of the best seasons to climb ice routes due to the minimal snow pack on the approach and solid forming ice up high. (more…)

Off the Beaten Path at Area BFE

Wednesday, December 15th, 2010

Area BFE…sounds like something out of a sci-fi movie with flashbacks of Roswell, New Mexico and its “alien” reputation. Not even remotely close to Roswell, this 320-acre privately owned area is just south of Jeeping Mecca…Moab, Utah. While the land may be “private,” it is open for public access for anyone who wants to enjoy one of its many off-highway trails or multitude of space for exploration. (more…)

Wham! Bam! Lessons in Colorado’s High Country

Tuesday, December 7th, 2010

I heard Jackie yell “ROCK!” but it wasn’t the “Rock!” that you would normally hear while climbing. This was a voice of panic and fear, and yelled at the top of her lungs…repeatedly. I looked up and watched a 500 pound boulder heading straight for my head at extremely high speed. This wouldn’t be the worst part of my day. (more…)
