Next year should be interesting. Due to hurricane, the terrain is severely altered. All easy trails were destroyed. They are only allowing 80 jeeps and the event sold out in hours.

Thanks for your interest in the project Kyle! The track bar was ditched when the leaf spring conversion was done. This was done using 2" BDS YJ springs in order to provide an inexpensive lift and accommodate the junkyard axles that originally used leaf springs. Most guys who still run coils (or coilovers) often convert to a triangulated four link when stretching the wheelbase, as it gets rid of the track bar.

This TJ uses a small Toyota rear differential and was only stretched a few inches, so the stock fuel take was able to be retained to keep with the budget theme. Gen-Right makes an excellent tank that works with their stretch kit, or I have seen many people use an RCI fuel cell behind the rear seat. That option is less expensive, but you give up what little cargo room the TJ started with.

First off, awesome Jeep. It's very cleanly done. Out of curiosity, What is the gas tank setup? Is it a modified stock tank? If so how was it done to accommodate the stretch? Also, what rear leafs does it use to get the stretch?

Thanks for the feedback! It is indeed a great event and one we look to cover again in JPFreek. So y'all have been to 10 Jamborees? That's awesome!! I'm sure Pearse and the gang at JJUSA will be happy to know you're a loyal customer.

By the way, you're in Conroe, Texas. We're based in downtown Houston so we're in your neighborhood (the parents of our founders live in The Woodlands area). Cheers!

My Husband and I did this Jamboree this past October. AMAZING TIME!!! The ORV Park was awesome. Had a great time and did a lot of hard and scary stuff. The guides were great and patient with this girl driver. I have done 10 Jamborees in my 97 Wrangler and I think this was one of my favorites. I even let my husband drive a little bit on this one:) Thanks for a great time. R. & S. Stroh, Conroe, TX

We've had questions about an updated recommendation for a GPS unit designed for off-road use since the Garmin unit in this article is no longer available.

Lowrance, a company known primarily for their Marine GPS units, has several tremendous options for off-road including the Elite 5M Baja Chartplotter. Check it out on the Lowrance website at www.lowrance.com.

Also, if you can find the Globalmap Baja540c by Lowrance, it is a favorite of mine after having used it for several years. Good luck!

The Flash stove and regular Jetboil stoves are lightning quick and extremely portable. I use my regular Jetboil stove everytime I go on a backpacking trip as it's not too heavy and extremely easy to use. Good stuff no doubt!

I use a RAM mount for my laptop in our diesel Grand Cherokee which runs a navigation software package entitled "Overland Navigator." The RAM mount attaches to bolt-in points on the floor board for the passenger seat and tucks away moves easily above the center console for quick reference by the driver or passenger.

I highly recommend RAM mounts for GPS and laptop applications. And if you're looking for an excellent software package to handle navigation on your laptop, checkout "Overland Navigator" from Spatial Minds at www.spatialminds.com. They have map packages by state and it's easy to use.

I have a 2005 Rubicon Unlimited with 35" tires and the manual transmission. I tried this thing and it made my jeep run worse and gutless. The performance settings caused lots of engine knocking even with octane additive. ***If you have something similar to me do not waste your money!***

F-150 might be better because of the # and size of the rocks/boulders out there. I'll check with Alan, the author, and see if he agrees but from my experience, that's what I recall and would suggest. Good luck!

I am planing to do Uncompahgre 25 September and I would like to know if I can drive my Subaru Legacy wagon (not Outback) up the Nellie Creek Road to the trailhead. I do have a 2wd drive F-150; would that be better?

Thanks, Arthur

Ha! Yep, it's quite a bit but when you're overlanding and traveling for an extended period of time, you've got to be prepared for self-sufficiency particularly when traveling abroad where resources are limited.

And keep in mind, this is just a general list of items needed and isn't comprehensive of everything you should consider. Just the basics are listed. ;)

Actually, that's a good observation. Apparently the previous owner had converted the coil springs to leaf springs. Not sure why this was done in the front but a front coil/rear leaf spring setup is actually a pretty good one.

Hey!

I just wanted to say thatnks! A tech a my friends offroad shop told me about the web site and that me jeep was on it. I rushed to se if it were true. Sure enough there was my pride and joy on the main page. My jeep is Lucy, the red Tj. She is featured in the photo slider. Its a great honor for you guys to use my jeep for that out of all the tjs and other jeeps there. My jeep has been at the show every year since I bought it almost 4 years ago. This was my first year of competition and after being purseuded by the guys at the shop I went for it. No awards but a lot of hard work went into that show. I didnt sleep for 26 hours to ensure it was top of the line going in. Everyone tellls me that I have a sweet jeep and how they wish they had it and as I nibble at the $35,000 total invested mark, if it hasnt passed by already, its nice to get some kind of reconition.
Thanks again!!! Your new fan

Once the kids get a little older, the experiences they have will mean even more to them.

On a recent trip, I asked my 10 year-old, "Do you think Mama's mini-van can do this?"

She immediately shook her head with a big smile on her face. Then, after a few seconds, she said, "But it might if we trick it out!"

... having 3 girls might not be so "girly" as I though.

I did email you awhile ago actually to your personal Rompalicious email, but never heard anything back from you. My email is rbeegley@gmail.com

Dave, we'll get some additional photos up so you can see what the others are talking about from their posts on the quality and use of poly-cotton materials.

I will say that I've used a less expensive version of RTT before and the difference in materials and craftsmanship undoubtedly is worth the extra cost of admission.

I don't know about the essi awn, but Ican tell you that the heavy canvas of a good quality RTT pays for it's self over time. I have an Adventure Trailer and purchased a RTT for it at the time they only offer the Overland brand, which is a heavy cotton fabric tent material, it's now 4 years old and has seen 4 months straight usage when we first got it and numberous other trips. Been through wind storms in MT, snow in CO and VA. down pours and daylong drizzles and never a leak or problem. And it looks as good a when we first got it. Take Shoguns advice, pay extra for the quality and you won't be sorry

The RTT lives in a hostile environment. Rain, snow, searing heat and sun, interstate highways, 80mph winds, off-road scrapes and bumps. Yet you need it to be soft, flexible, watertight, clean, dry etc. Throw in the fact that you expect it to deply quickly and without undue attention to detail, again in rough environments and frequently at night. You cant accept snags in the process, or frequent repairs in the field. It just needs to work.

I used to take tents for granted until I ran one for a year or so. Many products today just dont stand up the to abusive environment and yet work without fail. Its just not as simple as it looks. When the rest of my vehicle is covered with 1/4\ of dust, or mud, I dont want to climb in and sleep with my face in said dust/mud. Having set up in trees, I dont want to wake up to a tear just when the monsoon rains let go.

Its going to be your home, shelter, comfort. Spend some extra money on this, so you can spend your time on enjoying your trip, not cursing, complaining, repairing, adjusting.

Thanks for the comment Robert, hot weather performance on the trail was my concern when the temperature hits the 90 - 100 degree range. 6 times the price is the decision point?

I've used one of these for 10 years. While it preforms as specified, be aware that it is a cooler not a refrigerator. Thermoelectric coolers are typically rated to cool to 40 degrees below ambient. Not bad fro an 80 degree day, but not so much when on the trail on a 105 degree day. In Moab in July with temps around 105 drinks were barely cool, but we had ice form in the cooler each night. Putting an ice bag in the cooler for those hotter days works well in keeping it colder. We use ours extensively and love it. The ARB portable fridge/freezer is nicer, but cost 6 times as much.

I'm with you... too bad it's 2000 miles away. However, last time I WAS there, we caught the Silverton's (also in the San Juans near Ouray) 4th of July celebration. Best one ever. Nestled in the canyon one of their goals is to best Ouray's 4th celebration. Fantastic. Beats Ouray hands down!

Mark is one of those rare people who not only loves what he does but LIVES what he does and his experience as a 4x4 enthusiast is apparent in his work. And, he's also aware of what the end consumer thinks about this legendary brand and utilizes the consumer input he receives in bettering the future of the brand.

Definitely looking forward to talking to and working with Mark again soon!
