Ha! Yep, it’s quite a bit but when you’re overlanding and traveling for an extended period of time, you’ve got to be prepared for self-sufficiency particularly when traveling abroad where resources are limited.

And keep in mind, this is just a general list of items needed and isn’t comprehensive of everything you should consider. Just the basics are listed.

Actually, that’s a good observation. Apparently the previous owner had converted the coil springs to leaf springs. Not sure why this was done in the front but a front coil/rear leaf spring setup is actually a pretty good one.

Hey!

I just wanted to say thatnks! A tech a my friends offroad shop told me about the web site and that me jeep was on it. I rushed to se if it were true. Sure enough there was my pride and joy on the main page. My jeep is Lucy, the red Tj. She is featured in the photo slider. Its a great honor for you guys to use my jeep for that out of all the tjs and other jeeps there. My jeep has been at the show every year since I bought it almost 4 years ago. This was my first year of competition and after being purseuded by the guys at the shop I went for it. No awards but a lot of hard work went into that show. I didnt sleep for 26 hours to ensure it was top of the line going in. Everyone tellls me that I have a sweet jeep and how they wish they had it and as I nibble at the $35,000 total invested mark, if it hasnt passed by already, its nice to get some kind of reconition.

Once the kids get a little older, the experiences they have will mean even more to them.

On a recent trip, I asked my 10 year-old, “Do you think Mama’s mini-van can do this?”

She immediately shook her head with a big smile on her face. Then, after a few seconds, she said, “But it might if we trick it out!”

… having 3 girls might not be so “girly” as I though.

Dave, we’ll get some additional photos up so you can see what the others are talking about from their posts on the quality and use of poly-cotton materials.

I will say that I’ve used a less expensive version of RTT before and the difference in materials and craftsmanship undoubtedly is worth the extra cost of admission.

I don’t know about the essi awn, but Ican tell you that the heavy canvas of a good quality RTT pays for it’s self over time. I have an Adventure Trailer and purchased a RTT for it at the time they only offer the Overland brand, which is a heavy cotton fabric tent material, it’s now 4 years old and has seen 4 months straight usage when we first got it and numberous other trips. Been through wind storms in MT, snow in CO and VA. down pours and daylong drizzles and never a leak or problem. And it looks as good a when we first got it. Take Shoguns advice, pay extra for the quality and you won’t be sorry

The RTT lives in a hostile environment. Rain, snow, searing heat and sun, interstate highways, 80mph winds, off-road scrapes and bumps. Yet you need it to be soft, flexible, watertight, clean, dry etc. Throw in the fact that you expect it to deply quickly and without undue attention to detail, again in rough environments and frequently at night. You cant accept snags in the process, or frequent repairs in the field. It just needs to work.

I used to take tents for granted until I ran one for a year or so. Many products today just dont stand up the to abusive environment and yet work without fail. Its just not as simple as it looks. When the rest of my vehicle is covered with 1/4\ of dust, or mud, I dont want to climb in and sleep with my face in said dust/mud. Having set up in trees, I dont want to wake up to a tear just when the monsoon rains let go.

Its going to be your home, shelter, comfort. Spend some extra money on this, so you can spend your time on enjoying your trip, not cursing, complaining, repairing, adjusting.

I’ve used one of these for 10 years. While it preforms as specified, be aware that it is a cooler not a refrigerator. Thermoelectric coolers are typically rated to cool to 40 degrees below ambient. Not bad fro an 80 degree day, but not so much when on the trail on a 105 degree day. In Moab in July with temps around 105 drinks were barely cool, but we had ice form in the cooler each night. Putting an ice bag in the cooler for those hotter days works well in keeping it colder. We use ours extensively and love it. The ARB portable fridge/freezer is nicer, but cost 6 times as much.

I’m with you… too bad it’s 2000 miles away. However, last time I WAS there, we caught the Silverton’s (also in the San Juans near Ouray) 4th of July celebration. Best one ever. Nestled in the canyon one of their goals is to best Ouray’s 4th celebration. Fantastic. Beats Ouray hands down!

Have to agree 100% with the 1st comment. I’ve read several articles on the Overland Expo but this is without a doubt the most comprehensive and detailed one I have seen. Jeeps are getting a much greater presence when it comes to overlanding. These type of events will become more attended and more popular. Kudos to JPFreek for doing a great job reporting this!

Wow, that was an awesome account of the Overland Expo. I attended and was very impressed with the many creative products available for Jeepers as well as some of the creative ways in which people used the new items. It was nice to see so many people travel to Southern Arizona. Everyone was having a great time.
