NEMO Equipment Fillo Pillow

Wednesday, November 9th, 2011

The NEMO website describes the Fillo Pillow as “the pillow you’ve been waiting for.” We couldn’t agree more.

NEMO’s Fillo Pillow is undoubtedly the most comfortable pillow we’ve ever used in the field.  The pillow is so comfortable that it’s found its way into the bedroom as well. (more…)

The Mule Rack by Baja Rack

Tuesday, November 8th, 2011

One of the biggest challenges when preparing for a journey in a Jeep vehicle is space. Whether it’s a weekend excursion or an expedition to a remote locale, there’s rarely enough space in the vehicle to accommodate all the needs for storing camp gear, food, and everything else a person or family needs to have a successful trip. For many of us, the obvious answer is a rack system that maximizes storage, limits weight, and is also cost effective.

Enter the Mule Rack by BajaRack. (more…)

Tow Tech

Tuesday, November 8th, 2011

Towing a trailer is a skill many Jeep drivers find themselves needing at some point in their lives. Whether you are pulling a small fishing boat or a pop-up camper, a car hauler loaded with your precious Jeep cargo, or a massive 5th wheel vacation home…there are some common sense principles that hold true for any load. (more…)

It’s a Jeep Thing – Cape York in a WWII Jeep

Thursday, September 15th, 2011
I’ve just driven a World War II Jeep for the first time and I’m hooked! Our original plan was to borrow a mate’s Jeep to shoot a TV commercial at Chili Beach on Cape York but a last minute hiccup meant the loan Jeep was no longer available. Several frantic phone calls and a few hours scouring the web turned up a ‘42 Jeep for sale in Rockhampton. The call was made and the deal was struck with the plan of picking it up en route to Cairns (from Brisbane). A quick test drive around the block and up a rocky hill on a nearby new estate and the nimble little Jeep had won our hearts. (more…)

Catsailing with ‘Ol Rubi

Tuesday, August 2nd, 2011

One summer day in 2002, a friend invited my wife and me to go sailing on her little Sunfish. The power of the wind and water was exhilarating, and we were hooked. Pitting our skills against nature and the technical aspects of a sailboat drew us into catamarans which are the ultimate adventure in small boat sailing. (more…)

It’s the Journey, Not the Destination

Friday, July 22nd, 2011

It turns out the Mud Springs Trail in Arizona has confounded many of us Phoenician four-wheelers over the years. Back in the day before our first Jeep, George and I attempted Mud Springs in our ’99 Dodge Ram 1500 4×4, and on another outing we borrowed our neighbor’s ATV. On both occasions we missed reaching the Holy Grail at the end of the trail: an alleged “Miner’s Shack.” We tried it again when we were newbie’s in Number 7, and again we only got to Mud Springs Hill. In fact, the first time we actually made it to the Miner’s Shack was on foot and had hiked in from a different trailhead. (more…)

Dirt Roads & a Hole in the Rock

Wednesday, July 20th, 2011

Last summer, I bought a large-print road atlas online that was $10 down the drain! I thought it would be easier to read but it lacked detail. Since I prefer by-ways to interstates, it’s useless, I thought. But it happened to be in the Jeep during a long road-trip, and on some lonely stretch of blacktop, reading it out of pure boredom, I saw Hole-in-the-Rock Road on the Utah map. Then I noticed the ‘Grand Staircase-Escalante National Monument’ (GSENM), and the crummy book began to redeem itself. (more…)
