Catsailing with ‘Ol Rubi

Tuesday, August 2nd, 2011

One summer day in 2002, a friend invited my wife and me to go sailing on her little Sunfish. The power of the wind and water was exhilarating, and we were hooked. Pitting our skills against nature and the technical aspects of a sailboat drew us into catamarans which are the ultimate adventure in small boat sailing. (more…)

TJ Tailgate Conversion

Thursday, April 7th, 2011

Over the years I have owned a number of Jeep CJs, from a CJ5, three CJ7s, and two Scramblers. With the end of the CJ we were introduced to the new YJ Wrangler and as things would have it, two of them eventually made it into my stable. (more…)

My First Hundred Grand

Monday, April 4th, 2011

In July 31, 2002 I handed over the keys to my beat-to-death Chevy Cavalier – with a failing clutch and a nasty dent on the hood left by the tail pipe of a Ford pickup at about 22 mph – to a sales lady at the nearby Jeep dealership. What I was getting in return was a handsome red TJ with the X package and a manual transmission. (more…)

Tales of a Texas-Sized Jamboree

Tuesday, March 8th, 2011

I’m often asked, “Why would you pay $265.00 per person, NOT PER JEEP, Per PERSON, to attend a Jeep Jamboree USA® event when you can wheel at thousands of other venues and events around the country for less money?” Thankfully, there are a few hundred thousand people, with combined memories from a number of successful Jeep Jamboree events going back 50 years, feel the same way that I do. History of Jeep

Thursday, February 24th, 2011

In July 1940, the U.S. military informed automakers that it was looking for a “light reconnaissance vehicle” to replace the Army’s motorcycle and modified Ford Model-T vehicles. The Army invited 135 manufacturers to bid on production and developed a lengthy specification list for the vehicle. (more…)

Jeep D30 to D44 on a Budget

Friday, February 4th, 2011

For years many have said that I am running on borrowed time with the front axle in my CJ. The stock D30 has been in my CJ since I got it in 1997 with the only modification since then being the 4:10 gears installed a few years ago. I was told it would never hold up to the abuse it gets but it has never let me down. It was abused for several years with a V8 304 and 35 BFGs. Until recently the old weak D30 still hadn’t died but I knew it would eventually and thus began to look for an upgrade. (more…)

A Trip to the Maze

Friday, February 4th, 2011

“We’ve been planning this for a year, why cancel just because it ‘might’ rain?” That’s what we were thinking as cold, wet weather forecast approached in advance of Offroad Passport’s recent trip to the Maze at Canyonlands National Park. Besides, we had permits to camp at The Dollhouse and special guests who’d flown to Arizona just for this trip. (more…)

Part CJ, Part TJ – 100% Cool!

Wednesday, November 24th, 2010

A true Jeep hybrid!   No, it doesn’t get 50mpg but it does turn heads at the speed of light and despite all of the awesome Jeeps at SEMA 2010, this was my absolute favorite. (more…)
